The 1860 medical respirator was designed to help the wearer provide respiratory protection from certain airborne particles. It meets CDC guidelines for Mycobacterium tuberculosis exposure control. As a disposable particulate respirator, the aim is to reduce the wearer’s exposure to certain airborne particulates, including those produced by electrocautery, laser surgery and other electric medical instruments. As a surgical mask, it is designed to prevent the splashing of blood and other infectious substances.

While I haven’t contracted COVID-19 yet, something must be working because I haven’t experienced any issues with the masks I’ve been using. I wear a Nasum half-mask respirator, which has a valve, to protect myself from others, but not to protect them from me. To add an extra layer of protection, I also wear disposable N95 masks underneath my respirator. Although they may not provide the same level of protection as the half-mask respirator, they do offer some additional protection as an added layer.
