Twenty-three states told a U.S. court that the CDC does not have the authority to rule on transit masks
In a separate brief filed in July, the AMA said the CDC’s mask authorization “is a reasonable judgment to contain the spread of COVID-19, protect at-risk populations, and allow them to participate in public events when the number of cases warrants additional precautions.
It adds, “Simply put, if an infected person wears a mask, it reduces their ability to infect others. Data from the modeling study further show that ‘universal masks are the most effective way to limit the airborne spread of COVID-19’.
Days before U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball’s April 18 order, the CDC extended the mask request until May 3. The CDC said in May that travelers were still advised to wear masks on planes, trains and buses.
At today’s board meeting, Los Angeles County’s Supervisor Janice Hahn held extensive discussions about the possibility of reinstating the mask ban.
Janice Hahn asked Dr. Ferrer and Dr. Garry questions, many of which were asked to me by voters, and I made it clear where I stood on the issue. I hope you’ll take a moment to watch the video so you can get a full picture of the whole discussion, but I’ve also summarized my position as follows:
Janice Hahn prefers to align herself with the administration and not reinstate Los Angeles County’s mask ban. Janice Hahn heard from hundreds of people who strongly opposed another mask rule. Janice Hahn is worried about losing the trust of a section of the public that has supported us so far, but they don’t see the need for a cover-up order now.
When Los Angeles’ hospital system was threatened, they might have agreed to the order in the past, but now that fewer people are contracting severe COVID, they don’t see the need to enforce it.
I fear that if there are more severe outbreaks in the future, our ability to persuade the public to wear masks will be threatened. If the severity of COVID illness changes or our hospitals are at risk of overcapacity, we should reconsider this decision.
Dr. Feiler made clear, however, that she had seen a leveling off in the data, and that it was possible that the numbers would improve so much this week that she would not mandate masks on Friday.

I feel it’s critical for leadership to allocate budget toward mask awareness. Too many people in the US, for political reasons, refuse to wear a mask which is ridiculous. It’s too bad there is actually a large swath of the population that believes it’s an attempt at control and that they do not work. There are many places to get bulk face masks and bulk disinfectant wipes so it should be a no brainer to just wear them until we can ride out this pandemic.
